Unit 3

Pages and Exhibits

This unit introduces you to the creation of pages and exhibits in Omeka Classic. Both of these functions are enabled by the activation of the Simple Pages and Exhibit Builder plugins, respectively. Additionally, this unit also demonstrates what the public-facing side of an Omeka Classic site looks like and how to manage it.

Simple Pages in Omeka Classic

This video covers why you might use the Simple Pages plugin in Omeka Classic, the pragmatics of adding Simple Pages, and the Super User functionalities that control the display of Simple Pages in the menu of an Omeka Classic site.

Exhibit Building in Omeka Classic

The following video, produced by the Omeka team, goes over the basics of using the Exhibit Builder plugin (once it has been activated by a Super User).

There are some slight nuances and difficulties to using the Exhibit Builder plugin, which the following video covers. Keep in mind that the above video covers Exhibit Builder version 3.0, whereas the following video covers version 3.4.2.

Activities
  • Create one (or more!) simple pages in our SILS Omeka site.
    • Your first page could be an About You page—for example, my page would be “About Leah”
  • Play around with creating an exhibit in our SILS Omeka site.
    • NOTE: Creating an exhibit takes much more work than uploading a few items, so you may not have enough content that will allow you to “properly” experiment with an exhibit. That’s okay! Even just exploring the interface can still be useful.
    • If you want to create a well-developed exhibit, make sure you’ve added enough items from which you can build an exhibit. Be prepared to experiment with exhibit page layouts for a long time!
  • (Optional) Post any questions and/or comments in the forum below.
